The team knew it had found something special, a dangerous pass rusher who didn’t enter the league on a red carpet, in a downpour of dollar bills. Haralson arrived in the fifth round of the draft, the same one in which Houston passed on Reggie Bush , the Heisman Trophy winner and reputed Barry Sanders clone, to take defensive end Mario Williams with the No. Contract considerations might have dictated the Texans’ decision, but it also adhered to an NFL commandment: When in doubt while selecting a top draft choice, go with a pass rusher.
The most recent draft yielded 11 players who could be characterized as pass rushers among the 32 first-round picks. By the time teams reach the fifth round, the most promising pass rushers should be gone. Haralson was still there, a Tennessee defensive end who would convert to outside linebacker in the pros. When he became head coach in October, Mike Singletary – with the cooperation of defensive coordinator Greg Manusky – also put a stop to the hybrid defense, shifting between a and , that prevailed under Mike Nolan.
The defense would become a , and Haralson would be a full-time starter. He finished with eight sacks in 10 starts, ranking him in a tie for 17th in the NFL. Among the 16 players ahead of him, there were three other fifth-round picks and the famously undrafted terror in Pittsburgh, James Harrison. Everyone else went higher in the draft, and nine were first- or second-round picks.
In Sunday’s opener against Arizona, Haralson proved that hadn’t been a fluke and that he hadn’t settled into contentment because of his raise.
Film study: Reviewing Saints defense
Haralson spent the last two seasons with the Saints and posted 35 tackles and three sacks last season. He isn’t planning on retiring after this season, but he wants to remain with the tea m until his career comes to a close, according to NOLA. I’m not saying it’ll be my last stop in the NFL, but I just don’t want to be that guy that goes another year here, another year there, and then retires.

The San Francisco 49ers would not have found themselves an overtime away from Super Bowl XLVI if they weren’t a well-managed team with a financially balanced roster. That said, no NFL roster is devoid of at least a couple of players whose level of play hasn’t yet matched their amount of pay. Likewise, you’ll find a surprise late-round pick or undervalued veteran who’s outperformed his contract in any NFL city to which you travel. As you navigate through the upcoming slideshow, I’ll present you with three current members of the 49ers roster whom I view as slightly overpaid players and four who are—in my opinion—vastly underpaid in relation to the income of their peers in the National Football League.
Let me first emphasize, however, that the players I’ve selected for the “overpaid” portion of this article are not included because I feel they’ve got no place on this roster. Nor is it simply because I just don’t like them. It’s just that, for one reason or another, they’ve yet to provide an adequate return in regards to the investment the organization placed on said players.
And for the “underpaid” players—I do not believe the 49ers I’ve listed are immediately deserving of shiny new deals that would saddle the franchise with an unstable financial future.
49ers OLB Position Battle: Aldon Smith vs. Ahmad Brooks vs. Parys Haralson
A bunch of those guys in that locker room will probably be my friends for life,” Haralson said. They may still be his friends, but they are no longer his teammates, thanks to a preseason trade that brought Haralson to New Orleans. The move was tough, but Haralson took it all in stride. He’s now a solid contributor to the Saints’ seventh-ranked defense, contributing 14 tackles and two sacks.
We’ve been playing good football.

One battle for playing time involves the starting outside linebacker spots. There are some other players in the mix, but those three are the ones likely to see the most starting time. Accordingly, they find themselves competing for the two starting positions. At the start of training camp, Aldon Smith was working with the second team defense, although it seemed pretty clear that he would be getting some starting reps as a defensive end in the third down pass rush defense.
However, over the course of ten days Smith may be emerging as a legitimate challenger for a starting role. Thus far we’ve heard nothing but raves about Smith’s performance thus far. Ahmad Brooks missed some practice this past week, which allowed Smith a chance to work alongside Parys Haralson in the first team defense. However, now we might see Smith leap-frog Brooks on the depth chart.
We might have a better idea of where things stand when the 49ers roll out their starting lineup on Friday. In the meantime, this coming week of practice could prove pivotal in this battle for playing time. How do you see the OLB battle being decided?

Thanks to our guests Scott Ostler and Parys Haralson, our room turned into a casual, more relaxed setting. Both men seemed to light up the room with their presence and had an uncanny chemistry which brought a sense of entertainment to us as the spectators. Scott Ostler is a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle whose intent is to poke fun at any and all aspects of sports. Having reviewed some of his work prior to his visit, I knew to expect a quirky, almost over the top lover of sports.
He expressed his passion with his witty answers to our questions which directly reflected his even wittier character. Ostler has been writing since he was a child and has always preferred the funnier route when expressing his opinions which has led him to be one of the most successful sports writers in the greater Bay Area. Though he seems to be a very lovable and lighthearted person, it is understandable that, just like any other reporter, Ostler has made a few enemies in his lifetime.
However, he explained to us that it is simply the nature of the business. Not everyone is going to want to be friends. Although I wish he would have talked a little more about his past as opposed to his career, I appreciated all the insight he was able to give us about the world of sports journalism. Some observations on the New Orleans Saints defense after reviewing the tape of their victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Week Best to date? And it might be the most impressive thing the Saints defense has done to date this season — which is saying a lot. The Saints were downright dominant after San Francisco took over from its own yard line with remaining and the game tied On first-and, outside linebacker Junior Galette and defensive end Keyunta Dawson combined to sack 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick for a 9-yard loss.
The Saints only rushed four on the play, but Dawson and Galette criss-crossed on a stunt, and left tackle Joe Staley and left guard Adam Snyder both wound up blocking Dawson while Galette ran free. Galette hit Kaepernick first, and Dawson helped wrap him up. Then on second-and, Saints end Cameron Jordan nearly forced a game-winning safety when he pressured Kaepernick into an incomplete pass.
Jordan beat a double-team on the play from right tackle Anthony Davis and right guard Alex Boone. Kaepernick barely avoided an intentional grounding call, but I was OK with the no-call since he did take a couple steps outside of the pocket he just never got outside of Jordan. On third-and, Kaepernick took off running for a yard gain, but cornerback Chris Carr corralled him in time. More pressure: Jordan also beat Davis for a sack in the second quarter on a four-man rush; beat Staley to force an incomplete pass in the fourth quarter on a three-man rush; and batted down a pass on a four-man rush in the first quarter.
And on third-and-9 midway through the fourth quarter, the Saints sent a seven-man blitz that forced Kaepernick into an immediate overthrow. No blitz required: Saints innovative defensive coordinator Rob Ryan unveiled a new pass rush package throughout the game, with Galette and Jordan on the edges and Dawson and linebacker Parys Haralson lined up as defensive tackles.
